  4.     DIED. A.J.P. Taylor, 84, influential British historian and
  5. journalist; in London. A tutor and fellow at Oxford University
  6. for 38 years, Taylor was a prominent media personality -- with
  7. regular newspaper articles and television appearances -- and
  8. an accomplished scholar who wrote more than two dozen books,
  9. mainly on European history. His book The Origins of the Second
  10. World War was roundly criticized by some for its argument that
  11. Hitler was not uniquely evil and that war might have been
  12. avoidable through diplomacy. Despite Taylor's preference for
  13. scheduling courses at 9 a.m., students flocked to his lectures.
